External hard drives are available in 2.5" (portable) and 3.5" (desktop) form factors. Most hard drives connect through a 2.0 or 3.0 USB port. But with some computers, or according to the avaialble ports on your machine, you may prefer a SATA or Forewire connection. Check these elements carefully before selecting a disk model. Portable sizes are perfect to plug in a laptop. Hard drive storage capacity vary from 500 MB to 3 TB. Drives with higher capacity are especially interesting for the new generations of ultrabooks featuring flash memory.
